COLOURS OF SCARBOROUGH
Colours of Scarborough is both a document and a visual poem that reflects on the unique diversity of Scarborough while also capturing its buildings as they stand today. Given how fast city landscapes tend to change, this project also stems from a desire to archive the places that once inhabited my life.
Taken over the course of four years, it is the result of multiple solo ventures to both familiar and unknown places in the city. In each photograph, I extract a colour palette that highlights the vibrancy and character of its location, showcasing the beauty of even the most ordinary subjects. My aspiration for this project is to reveal the overlooked charm of Scarborough by transforming everyday scenes into compelling visual narratives.
The main themes are the buildings that populate Scarborough’s landscapes, including but not limited to plazas, storefronts, schools, religious spaces, as well as parks and greenspaces. Scarborough is different from other suburbs because of its multiculturalism and diversity, a uniqueness captured in each photograph.
By focusing on the often-neglected beauty of Scarborough, my project invites visitors to venture through their own neighbourhood and city. Inspired by the diverse views and colours of Scarborough, the project underscores how inspiration can be found in one’s immediate and most personal surroundings.
